Please Don't Forget These Moments

A letter to my children as they become adults.

Dear Child of Mine,

When you are my age and you look back,

I hope you remember your childhood with fondness. I hope you remember it as a time of limited to no real responsibilities. A time when you felt weightless.

I hope that you remember laughing around the supper table when the jokes were riffing off one another and each person who upped the ante made us all roar with laughter.

I hope that you remember the quiet moments when it was just you and me in a precious stolen moment where you were not one of the group of kids but my entire focus.

I hope that you remember me telling you that I love you every day. Because I do. I love you every day.

I hope that you remember placing your hand palm to palm with mine to measure our fingers and see if yours were longer.

I hope that you remember the spontaneous trips for ice cream, or the times when we would go somewhere for dinner simply because it was the new hyped up thing.

I hope that you remember our game nights and snacks that went with game night.

I hope that you remember that I always tried to say something if I saw something. I hope that you know that even if the conversation was difficult, I loved you every minute of the talk.

I hope that you remember going to the park and yelling "watch this!!" for every piece of playground equipment. I hope that you remember spinning in circles until we were dizzy. I hope that you remember playing volleyball until the sun went down. I hope that you remember balancing on balance beams with one small sweaty hand clutching my fingers.

I hope that you remember asking for something (a treat, a notebook, deodorant) and remember it just mysteriously appearing on the shelf as a silent declaration of love.

I hope that you remember being read to, and that you remember some of your favorite stories that we would read on repeat. Dr Seuss had no idea how integral he would become to bedtime routines in our house.

I hope that you remember me singing loudly in the car if I sensed a bad mood coming from the back seat. I hope that you remember my antics and laugh.

I hope that you remember that you can call me. No matter what. Any time.

I love you always.

Mom
